Endrew F. v. Douglas County School District (2017)
Primary Disability Involved: Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)
Court Findings: Endrew F., a student with ASD, and his parents argued that his individualized education plan (IEP) was not helping him make meaningful progress. The Supreme Court ruled that schools must provide an educational program consistent with prior rulings to raise the standard of special education services, enabling students to make progress appropriate to the individual (Zirkel & Yell, 2024).
IDEA/ESSA Impacts: The court decision raised expectations for IEP development and implementation for student progress. Schools are legally required to prove that IEP goals are designed to help students achieve meaningful educational growth (Zirkel & Yell, 2024). This ensures that the Individuals with Disabilities Act (IDEA) is provided with an education, and has a successful education, aligning with the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA), including students with disabilities.
